As I reflect on the month of March during my internship, I can confidently say it was a valuable opportunity to see just how important wheat is to Nebraska. Throughout National Agriculture Month, I saw firsthand how the Nebraska Wheat Board educates and promotes wheat across the state. From traveling to various events to helping prepare educational and promotional materials, I was able to support efforts that connected students and communities with the wheat industry in Nebraska.

I had the opportunity to travel and participate in several agricultural events this month, including the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association meeting, the Nebraska Farm Bureau Ag Week Celebration, an Ag Leaders Legislative Breakfast, and the State FFA Convention.  I loved attending each of these events and gained a better understanding of the NWB’s role at each one.  It was also so exciting to see so many individuals come together to advocate for and support agriculture across Nebraska.

The Nebraska Wheat Growers Association meeting took place in Ogallala, NE, where board members and other producers gathered to discuss ways to increase membership, improve brand promotion, and ensure funds are being used effectively. I had the opportunity to meet several producers and listen to conversations focused on strengthening the organization.

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Ag Week Celebration was another key event I attended.  The NWB hosted a booth, where I helped teach children about wheat and its importance to our state while handing out take-home wheat growing kits.  This was a rewarding experience, as I was able to engage with younger individuals who may not have much exposure to agriculture. I also listened to Governor Pillen speak about National Ag Week and the importance of supporting firefighters, ranchers, and communities facing wildfires.

At the Ag Leaders breakfast, we listened to discussions on bills in the Nebraska Legislature. I had the opportunity to see Nebraska senators in action and connect with other agricultural leaders.  Many of the leaders shared challenges they are facing within their specific commodities, as well as concerns involving research. I also helped put together National Ag Week goodie bags that included a snack or gift item representing each commodity. We delivered these bags to the Nebraska senators and their office staff, which was a great way to celebrate National Ag Week while introducing myself to state leaders.

State FFA was another important event I helped with.  I helped run the booth and promoted it before and during the convention.  I loved being able to connect with younger students who are part of an organization that had such a strong impact on me.  I enjoyed explaining the activity at our booth and watching students learn more about wheat. It was exciting to see so many students wanting to be involved in agriculture. I also appreciated the opportunity to share information about internship and scholarship opportunities. Seeing the interest from young people in agriculture is encouraging, and I hope it continues for future generations.

Since March was National Agriculture Month, many schools, banks, and organizations celebrated.  We created wheat seed bags with how to plant wheat cards for West Holt Elementary school and the Nebraska Farm Bureau Ag Celebration.  We also made NWB giveaway bags for National Ag Week for American Exchange Bank in Eagle and the Nebraska Department of Agriculture.  I was able to dig through promotional and educational materials and put together meaningful bags to strengthen Nebraska Wheat’s message.

In addition to attending events, I spent several days in the office focusing on projects.  I created social media posts for National Pi Day, St. Patrick’s Day, State FFA Convention, National Ag Week, and World Flour Day, to name a few.  I enjoy using my creativity when I open Canva and start a new graphic.  I also worked with Rural Radio Network again this month to coordinate weekly radio reports.   Some of our reports were with individuals like Leah Christen, a Nebraska state FFA officer, Royce Schaneman, Executive Director of the NWB, Jess McCluer with the National Grain Association, and an update on my internship.

Press releases were another main focus throughout March.  I worked on drafts for new leadership in Plains Grains Inc. and highlighted the Portland Wheat Marketing Workshop. While writing press releases can be challenging for me, it continues to strengthen my writing skills and build my confidence that I know will benefit me in my future career.

Overall, this month meant a lot to me. Being able to connect with people, share my passion for agriculture, and represent Nebraska wheat in so many different ways has been incredibly rewarding. I’m really thankful for these experiences and excited to see how I continue to grow in the next month!
