A Slice of Intern Life Welcomes New Face

Hi everyone! My name is Peyton Carpenter, and I have the honor of acting as the new Communications and Outreach Intern for the Nebraska Wheat Board this summer. I am entering into my senior year this fall at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (Go Huskers!). I am majoring in Agricultural Economics with a minor in Agronomy, and I am also a proud member of the University of Nebraska Honors Program.

A little bit about me – I am from Minnesota and decided to attend Lincoln for their outstanding agriculture program. I did not grow up with a background in agriculture but had always found myself wanting to learn more about the industry and become more involved. Since then, my passion for agriculture has only grown as I pursue my degree.

Outside of work and school, I enjoy playing golf and tennis and am an avid hockey fan. I also love being a member of my sorority, Delta Gamma, where I participate in their philanthropy and sisterhood events!

After my first few weeks interning, I am excited to share what I have been working on behind the scenes and share a little bit of what I do in my role. As the Communications and Outreach Intern, a few of my responsibilities include running the Nebraska Wheat Board Instagram, Facebook and X pages, helping release weekly crop reports, and assisting with the coordination and communication for our radio segment on KVRN. I also develop the Nebraska Wheat Grower’s Association e-newsletter and monthly press releases. Additionally, later this summer I will have the opportunity to be involved with youth programs, including 4-H youth camps and presenting at the Nebraska Agricultural Youth Institute.

This past week, I had the opportunity to travel to North Platte for meetings with the Nebraska Wheat Growers Association and Nebraska Dry Pea and Lentil Commission. I am grateful that I get to learn more about these organizations and have the opportunity to see how meetings are run firsthand. This summer I am eager to learn everything I can in the short time while I am interning with the NWB. My biggest interests lie in commodity merchandising and management. Being able to see and experience firsthand how commodity boards run, I am able to connect what I learn and have a better understanding of commodity markets and how they function. I am especially excited to gain real world insights from farmers by attending field days and meetings with other agricultural organizations across Nebraska.

I am incredibly thankful for this opportunity and look forward to the projects, experiences, and connections ahead of me this summer, and I am excited to be able to share more in the future!
