What is the Nebraska Wheat Board?

Nwb Districts

The Nebraska Wheat Board is made up of six district directors and one at-large director representing the entire state. District boundaries are determined to maintain, as closely as possible, an equal number of wheat acres in each district.

The board oversees the investment of wheat checkoff funds collected across Nebraska. Each bushel of wheat marketed in the state is assessed at a fee of five-tenths of one percent (0.5%) of the net value at the point of first sale. These funds are deposited into the State Treasury and are used by the NWB to strengthen and advance Nebraska’s wheat industry.

Additional information on the process of collection as well as the checkoff regulations can be found at the Nebraska Department of Agriculture who helps administer the checkoff.

How Checkoff Funds Are Invested

To ensure responsible use of checkoff dollars, the board of directors reviews and approves all funding decisions. Organizations and researchers submit funding proposals annually, regardless of whether they received support the previous year.

Each proposal receives two readings by the board before funding decisions are finalized during the board’s annual budget meeting, typically held in May or June.

As directed by the Nebraska Wheat Resources Act, checkoff funds are invested in five key areas:

  • International Marketing
  • Domestic Marketing
  • Research
  • Federal Farm Policy
  • Education & Promotion

These investments help expand markets, improve wheat production, support policy efforts and promote the value of Nebraska wheat.
