Nutrition Facts

Wheat is part of the grains group on MyPlate. If you haven’t visited MyPlate lately, there’s no time like the present. The focus remains on balance, moderation, and variety in food choice.

Grains in the Diet

Adults should consume five to eight servings of grain foods, depending on age and gender. For children, the recommendation is three to seven servings, again depending on age and gender. In addition, it is very important to increase the amount of whole grains in your diet. At least half of the grain foods you eat should be of the whole-grain variety. The following Grains in your Diet card is available for free from NWB.

Gluten is a protein commonly found in wheat, barley and rye. It provides the structure for baking products like bread. Persons with an auto-immune disease called Celiac Disease are unable to digest or consume gluten. However, for the majority of people, gluten is safe to consume. In fact, for those without Celiac Disease, a gluten-free diet may be harmful. The card pictured below shares more information on gluten and free copies may be requested from our office.
